3. Write a meta description to increase the click-through rate

In terms of ranking, meta-description does not affect WordPress SEO (in particular, Google automatically displays a more appropriate summary description based on the search user’s search). However, they do affect your click rate. A well-written meta description can attract users to click on the article.

Previously, the meta-description could not exceed 156 characters. Google updated it to 320 characters in December 2017, but later restored the changes to 150 to 170 characters. You may not see any excess content in the SERP.

Keep in mind, however, that some search engines, such as Google, automatically rewrite some meta-descriptions. What you enter may not always be displayed in SERP.

4. Use the H title tag correctly

Search engine spiders are checking H tags (for example, H1Magi, H2Magi, H3, etc.) to determine the relevance of your site’s content. Typically, the best practice is to set a single H1 tag for each article or page, followed by multiple H2 and H3.

Think of this as a hierarchy of importance. The H1 tag is your most important header and should contain your core keywords. Other headings may also contain your keyword or its long-tailed keywords.

However, do not abuse the H title. This content is used to split your content to make it easier for visitors to read.

If encoded correctly, most WordPress topics will automatically assign page titles or articles as H1 headers. Then, you can assign the H2Magi H3TH4 header and so on in the article or page.

5. Always remember that “content is king”

As the saying goes, “content is king”. Any search engine or visitor likes high-quality content. It is usually much better to publish long content than to publish shorter content.

In short, they found that long content has a better chance of getting better rankings in search engines, even if other possible factors are taken into account.

Another advantage of long content is that with the passage of time, not only core keywords will get search rankings, but also multiple long-tailed keyword variants derived from core keywords will get better rankings.

Sometimes it can cover hundreds of popular search words and phrases. All the long-tailed keywords contained in a long page will generate more traffic than your core keywords.

6. Create key pages to build credibility

This tip is not a direct ranking factor, but we still think it is essential. Every high-quality website should have several key pages. If you lack them, you may run the risk of making visitors seem less trusted.

EAT (Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) is a concept emphasized in Google’s search quality evaluation guide, and it has become the focus of SEO in recent years. The general idea is that the website should be built with EAT in mind, showing that they are experts in their respective fields while demonstrating authority and trust.

Google also talked publicly about how sites affected by its core updates should pay attention to EAT, indicating the importance of the concept to Google’s algorithms.

If you haven’t already, you should have the following pages (at least) on your WordPress site:

  • About the page. This should provide some basic information about your brand, mission, and what you must provide for visitors. It usually helps to build this content into a narrative by describing how your brand is formed.
  • Contact page. Display the actual address (if your business has one), phone number, email, and other related contact information to show the user that there is a real person behind your site. Ahrefs is a good tool for analyzing web page backlink data. You can view the total number of backlinks to the site, the number of recommended fields, natural keywords, and so on. Backlink notifications for the platform are also helpful.

There are many reverse link statistical analysis tools on the market, and the accuracy of Ahrefs is better. 8. Find links to competitor sites

Some free value-added tools can help you solve this problem, such as Ubersuggest, which checks several websites every day before clicking on the paywall. Other tools such as Ahrefs can also help you view all links to a specific page or an entire domain.

Sometimes you need to emphasize the relationship between your site and the site you link to. For example, if you include affiliate links in your content to earn commission from linked sites, links should not pass SEO weights because they are considered unnatural. The same is true of sponsorship banners that link to other sites.

Although dofollow is not a link “rel” attribute, the term is widely used when referring to standard links.

By default, each link you create in WordPress is a dofollow link. Google crawls these types of links when analyzing your site. These links help establish authority that affects your ranking, because link weights are passed from the link page.

You may have heard people say you need more backlinks. If so, they may be referring to dofollow links from other high-authority websites.

The Nofollow link contains the “rel” attribute of “nofollow”, as follows:

The Nofollow attribute prompts the search engine crawler to ignore these links. However, this is not to say that nofollow links are not required. Even if they don’t pass the authority and influence your ranking, they can still generate traffic. You can read our tutorials on different ways to add nofollow links to WordPress.

Nofollow links are usually used when placing links at the request of linked sites. This is because the link conveys value between pages, so it should happen naturally. Manipulating your site to link to you violates Google guidelines, so ignoring this may result in your site being penalized.

In general, natural backlink profiles include a good ratio between dofollow and nofollow links.

The sponsorship link contains the “rel” attribute of “sponsored”, as shown below. This is used to display the time of the sponsored link.

Sponsor links are often used as part of paid activities, where the goal of sponsor links should be to increase traffic, not to transfer value from the link page. Paying for links that deliver value violates Google guidelines, so it’s important to ensure that any sponsored link uses the sponsored link attribute.

The UGC link is used to show when the user created the link. These are usually added to links placed in blog posts or forum comments, where users can add links.

Many WordPress bloggers use Affiliate links on their websites. Affiliate links are usually used when you want to track product commissions or recommendations or registrations between websites.

Unfortunately, Google generally does not approve of Affiliate links that do not contain the necessary “rel” attributes. Some websites have even been penalized for having a large number of Affiliate links. In order to use satellite links safely, they should always contain the “sponsored” attribute. A good way to track your Affiliate links and always make sure they use the sponsored attribute is to use member plug-ins such as Pretty Links or ThirstyAffiliates.

Google also says that you can use the nofollow attribute for Affiliate links, so if you already have this property, you don’t need to update your link.

Pretty Links enables you to create simple and short Affiliate links, including the sponsored attribute and use 301redirection. Simply go to Pretty Links & gt; Options in the WordPress dashboard to enable these settings:

You can select the relevant redirect type from the drop-down list, and then select the enable No Follow and Sponsored check boxes so that all your Affiliate links contain nofollow and sponsored attributes. Adding the nofollow attribute will ensure that all search engines understand that it is not a natural link.

11. Do a good job of internal links to the website

An internal link is a link from one page or an article on your WordPress site to an article on another page or on the same site. Inner chain is not only the key of SEO optimization, but also the key of website navigation.

Typically, when referencing other content you have written or linking to other landing pages within your own site, you need to do so through internal links.

Moz wrote an article on inchaining to illustrate the importance of internal links, in short:

  • The inner chain serves as a navigation guide for the website, helping visitors to better access the content of the site, greatly increasing the user viscosity and reducing the bounce rate.
  • The inner chain helps to establish the content hierarchy and structure of the website.
  • The inner chain is generally a dofollow link, which helps to spread weights between pages within the site.

We recommend that you add at least three to five internal links to each article or page. Depending on the length of the content, you can add more inner chains.

There are three main types of broken links:

  • Inbound link corruption: links from other sites to your page

There are several ways to find and repair broken links on WordPress sites. The first step is to check them in Google Search Console. This is another reason why you should use this platform. To find broken links in Google Search Console, check for errors in the coverage section and invalid fetch requests in the Settings section (detailed in the crawl error prompt).

If you click the “error” box and scroll down to the “details” section, you can see a list of all the problems Google encountered when crawling your site. This will include a 404 error, which usually indicates that the link is broken.

Google Search Console will tell you the location of these broken links so that you can go to the site and replace them with valid links. You should then resubmit the page to the search engine.

Some tools (free and paid) will scan your website for broken links. For example, Online Broken Link Checker is a free tool that crawls your page and provides details of any broken links it encounters.

You can also use crawl tools to crawl pages on your site, just as Google crawls your pages. This can help you find any crawling problems caused by broken links. Screaming Frog provides a free tool that allows you to do this, and the paid version provides additional features. Although this crawler is very powerful, it is an advanced tool, so if you are new to the SEO field, you may want to know how to use it.

WordPress also has broken link plug-ins. However, we do not recommend these because they tend to damage the performance of your site.

Finding and repairing broken links to your site can be more challenging because you have no control over how external sites link to you. The Ahrefs break Link Checker (as described above) also provides examples of up to 10 broken inbound links, but paid tools provide more data. This can be well worth spending every month, especially for large websites that have been around for some time, so you have a better chance of building a list of broken links over time.

Once you have a list of broken links, you can contact the linked site and ask them to update the link, or simply add the 301 redirection from the damaged URL to the correct URL (or to the appropriate page on your site). This will restore the flow of link juice, provide an instant boost to your page, and help improve their ranking in the search.

Like adding internal links, you should also link to pages on other sites to provide visitors with additional context about the topics you cover. For example, you may link to detailed guides on specific topics that are not covered on your site. By adding links that reference external content, you provide readers with a way to further study different topics, making your content a good resource worth ranking at the top of the search results.

It’s also a good way to start a conversation with other brands. If you link to another company in the article, please send them a quick email or tweet after posting and request to share. If they share through social data, their articles can bring you more traffic. We often use this method ourselves.

We recommend adding at least two external links to each piece of content. When doing so, a good trick for people to stay on your site is to have the link open in a new tab or window.

Some people may argue that they don’t like it, but it can help encourage users to come back to your site later, otherwise they may have forgotten about you.

Theme custom editing or you can delete these links by editing the theme's footer.php file. But if you are not familiar with the code, this can be tricky, so modify it as customized as possible.

16. Stay away from negative SEO

Negative SEO is a crucial topic because many people don't know how to deal with it.

You usually use SEO, and you want to get backlinks from other sites, which helps establish your domain and page permissions. But manipulating links violates Google guidelines, so if your site is marked as involving a link scheme, you may be punished for linking.

This is the opportunity for negative SEO to display its talents. Anyone can link to your site, so if someone can add many links to make it look like you are manipulating search results, your site may be punished for linking. 17. Select your preferred domain

Www and non-www

If you are just starting to set up a website, you may be confused about whether the domain name of the site contains www. Some people think that this will affect the SEO of WordPress.

In short, having www in the domain name of a website will not bring any benefits to SEO, nor will it affect the ranking of websites in any way. However, this does not mean that non-www addresses should always be used. You may even want to use www because:

  • It used to be standard to use www as part of the domain name of a website. Of course, there is no such explanation right now, and many websites do not use www. You may see that many websites in the past continue to use www domain names, one of the reasons is that changes to them can be complex and problematic. Many older websites can only continue to use the www domain name.
  • Because of the Domain name system (DNS) records, large websites with high traffic may want to use www. Technically, bare domains (without www domains) cannot have CNAME records that are used to redirect traffic for failover. However, there is a solution to this problem.

In the final analysis, whether to use www domain or non-www domain is more a matter of personal preference. Maybe you prefer the shorter URL, in which case you can use a naked domain.

Keep in mind that no matter which version you choose, you can set redirection so that you can access each version. For example, if you access wbolt.com, it will be redirected directly to www.wbolt.com.

Previously, you could set the preferred domain displayed in search results through Google Search Console. However, the Google webmaster platform removed this option in 2019. Today, it will determine the version of the domain name based on the information collected from the site, such as structured data tags.

Avoid duplicate URL

As mentioned above, you should only allow access to one version of URL and use redirection to transfer users and crawlers to the correct URL. This goes a step further when considering other factors, such as the case used in your URL. For example, the following URL might load the same content, which means that search engines can index them as two separate pages.

www.wbolt.com/about-us/ www.wbolt.com/About-Us/

The same is true for URL that ends with a slash and does not end with a slash. For example:

www.wbolt.com/about-us/ www.wbolt.com/about-us

And it's also protocol-based. For example:

https://www.wbolt.com/about-us/  
About us.

This is bad for SEO because each duplicate version is effectively competing with the original version. Redirecting any duplicate URL to the original URL will ensure that all ranking signals are transferred to one version, making it more likely to appear in search results.

The redirection rule ensures that anyone accessing the wrong version is directed to the correct version.

If you want to make sure that Google knows which domain to use, you can add the specification tag to your site manually or using a plug-in (more on this later). Submitting a site map is also helpful.

Search engines like clean, organized and structured websites. This includes the use of short URL, which can help you increase your click-through rate. MarketingSherpa conducted a study and found that it was 250% more likely to be clicked on the search results list if:

  • The URL is very short.
  • Appears in the search results list in a more complete form.

By default, WordPress creates messy fixed links (URL structures) that are not very clean at all (learn how to change the URL of your site). The default structure currently inserts the date and the article or page name into the URL, as follows:

https://yourdomain.com/2020/03/31/sample-post/

Google prefers a URL that contains content titles and / or keywords, but a shorter URL is generally better. We recommend using the article name fixed link setting because it is clean and beneficial to your site's SEO:

https://yourdomain.com/sample-post/

You can change the permalink structure to the article name by clicking permalink under the Settings menu in the WordPress dashboard. Select the article name and click Save changes:

In both the Classic Editor and the Gutenberg Editor, you can find a permalink setting that allows you to edit the slug of the article or the URL section that appears after the last backslash (/). In the Classic Editor, it appears directly below the title of the article:

However, it is important to note that changing your permalink structure after the article is online may break all your previous links.

If you want to change the permalink structure on your old site, be sure to redirect the previous URL to the new URL through a third-party plug-in, such as Permalink Manager Lite.

If you are on a different host, be sure to redirect the previous URL to the new permalink by editing the .htaccess file.

19. Install SSL certificate

Google has officially stated that HTTPS is a ranking factor. This is nothing new. HTTPS is also one of Google's page experience metrics (described in more detail later).

Matthew Barby analyzed 1 million URL and found that more than 33% of all the top three pages in Google's SERP used HTTPS:

To use it, you need to install an SSL certificate on your site. Although this may only be a small ranking factor, HTTPS has become the Internet standard. Web sites that do not use SSL certificates may see warnings in Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers highlighting that the site connection is not secure.

If you have not already installed a SSL certificate on the website, install one as soon as possible.

If your server uses the pagoda control panel, you can directly apply for a free SSL certificate at BT backend and deploy with one click.

If your server or domain name service provider fails to provide a free SSL certificate (Note: Aliyun, Tencent Cloud, Baidu Cloud and Huawei Cloud all provide free SSL certificate applications), you can also apply through freessl.org.

Although this is only a small ranking factor, there is no reason to give up any chance to beat competitors. In addition, the advantages of installing SSL certificates for websites outweigh the disadvantages.

In addition, considering the trend that most search engines are pushing webmasters to migrate to HTTPS, the weight of SSL is likely to increase in the future.

20. Generate site map

No matter foreign search engines such as Google,Bing and Yandex, or domestic search engines such as Baidu, Sogou and 360, all support Sitemap to understand the hierarchy and structure of WordPress sites and ensure better crawling.

A site map is an unnecessary part of a site, but creating a site map can help you access more reporting data about your site.

It is recommended that you create a XML sitemap file for your WordPress site as much as possible.

Although WordPress now provides the ability to generate XML sitemaps, it is recommended that you use plug-ins to generate Sitemap with a clearer structure, such as the Smart SEO Tool plugin, whenever possible:

21. Submit site map to Google Search Console

In addition to submitting Sitemap to Google, Bing and Yandex, webmasters should choose to submit Sitemap to more other search engines according to their actual needs, such as:

24. Request fetching to speed up indexing

Typically, when you post content on a WordPress site, Google determines how fast it can index your content. It could be any time from minutes to hours or days.

25. Check for crawl errors

Crawling errors occur when crawlers (search engines, robots, etc.) cannot access the page. This can happen for a number of reasons, from incorrect link settings or content deleted without redirection, to server errors that prevent the server from performing response fetch requests.

A good way to check for crawl errors is to go to your Google Search Console account. You can find coverage reports here that provide details of any errors Google encountered while crawling your site.

Clicking any error type will take you to see some examples of the URL that encountered the error. You can then click the check URL icon next to each link to learn more about how Google discovered the URL.

Search engine spider crawling seems to have little to do with SEO optimization.

When a set of URL on your site returns the same content, the search engine will select a unique URL for that content, called an authoritative link. This URL will be crawled more frequently, will take precedence over the URL of other repetitive content in search results, and treat the backlink of the URL of repeated content as a link (weight transfer) to an authoritative link. The Core Web Vitals report uses field data to display page performance based on actual user data. Although you cannot check all the pages on the site at this time, you will find sample pages, and selecting a page from the results list will usually provide more results for other similar pages.

Other Google developer tools, including Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights, also allow you to use lab data to check the Core Web Vitals of any page, which helps identify problems.

However, these tools will produce results based on your machine data and Internet speed, which may not reflect your user experience.

Google has included Core Web Vitals in its ranking algorithm since May 2021, which means that your better-performing pages will now get higher rankings, while poorly performing pages may decline.

The report provides both mobile and desktop search results, so getting high scores in both areas means that your page will improve its ranking in both mobile and desktop search results.

How to improve Core Web Vitals

Through the Core Web Vitals report, we can see how the page performs on each metric, so here we can see what Google thinks is "good", "in need of improvement" and "bad".

As with all reports available in GSC, only URL examples are provided, but this gives us a good idea of the type of page in question. For example, many blog posts on a website may be marked as "poor". You can display whether the selected query has multiple page rankings by clicking each keyword and selecting the pages tab.

You may want to add the target country to the filter at the top, especially if you translate the content into another language.
